Maya Mondays: Doesn't Mean We're Not Real.

Yesterday, Sunday June 26, 2016, Jesse Williams delivered a speech that spoke volumes to the racially- and politically-charged events of our country.  While there are many quotes I could extract to create inspirational Monday posts that fit our Maya Monday schedule, I decided to share the entire transcript today... you may not see it on the island tomorrow but, mark my words, you will see it again.  And again.  And again.  Why?  It's just that good.

"Peace peace. Thank you, Debra. Thank you, BET. Thank you Nate Parker, Harry and Debbie Allen for participating in that .
Before we get into it, I just want to say I brought my parents out tonight. I just want to thank them for being here, for teaching me to focus on comprehension over career, and that they make sure I learn what the schools were afraid to teach us. And also thank my amazing wife for changing my life.
Now, this award – this is not for me. This is for the real organizers all over the country – the activists, the civil rights attorneys, the struggling parents, the families, the teachers, the students that are realizing that a system built to divide and impoverish and destroy us cannot stand if we do.
It’s kind of basic mathematics – the more we learn about who we are and how we got here, the more we will mobilize.
Now, this is also in particular for the black women in particular who have spent their lifetimes dedicated to nurturing everyone before themselves. We can and will do better for you.
Now, what we’ve been doing is looking at the data and we know that police somehow manage to deescalate, disarm and not kill white people everyday. So what’s going to happen is we are going to have equal rights and justice in our own country or we will restructure their function and ours.
Now… I got more y’all – yesterday would have been young Tamir Rice’s 14th birthday so I don’t want to hear anymore about how far we’ve come when paid public servants can pull a drive-by on 12 year old playing alone in the park in broad daylight, killing him on television and then going home to make a sandwich. Tell Rekia Boyd how it’s so much better than it is to live in 2012 than it is to live in 1612 or 1712. Tell that toEric Garner. Tell that to Sandra Bland. Tell that to Dorian Hunt.
Now the thing is, though, all of us in here getting money – that alone isn’t gonna stop this. Alright, now dedicating our lives, dedicating our lives to getting money just to give it right back for someone’s brand on our body when we spent centuries praying with brands on our bodies, and now we pray to get paid for brands on our bodies.
There has been no war that we have not fought and died on the front lines of. There has been no job we haven’t done. There is no tax they haven’t leveed against us – and we’ve paid all of them. But freedom is somehow always conditional here. “You’re free,” they keep telling us. But she would have been alive if she hadn’t acted so… free.
Now, freedom is always coming in the hereafter, but you know what, though, the hereafter is a hustle. We want it now.
And let’s get a couple things straight, just a little sidenote – the burden of the brutalized is not to comfort the bystander. That’s not our job, alright – stop with all that. If you have a critique for the resistance, for our resistance, then you better have an established record of critique of our oppression. If you have no interest, if you have no interest in equal rights for black people then do not make suggestions to those who do. Sit down.
We’ve been floating this country on credit for centuries, yo, and we’re done watching and waiting while this invention called whiteness uses and abuses us, burying black people out of sight and out of mind while extracting our culture, our dollars, our entertainment like oil – black gold, ghettoizing and demeaning our creations then stealing them, gentrifying our genius and then trying us on like costumes before discarding our bodies like rinds of strange fruit. The thing is though… the thing is that just because we’re magic doesn’t mean we’re not real.
Thank you."

Frugal Friday: Awesome Dollar Tree Find!

You see the title, Islander.  It's been a long time since we had a Frugal Friday!  I'm so excited to share something that just came off the truck at your local Dollar Tree!

First, let me say that these bags are currently sold for a LOT more elsewhere:

I was so excited to see them on the end caps near the register and HAD to buy one box (they come with two inside).  You simply take the bag, clip it to the sides of the cart and fill it at checkout.  THEN, when it's time to carry the items to the car, simply un-clip, grab the handles and carry to the car!

I didn't believe these would work but, let me just tell you, they do!  Hurry to your Dollar Tree and find this AMAZING DEAL before it's gone!

Frugal Friday - Dollar Tree Finds!

You may recall the Dollar Tree series in October.  In that series, I shared fabulous finds in one of my favorite stores!  Just because the series came to end doesn't mean I don't frequent "the spot!"  During a recent visit, I found three new items I absolutely LOVE!  Here they are:

1. Animal Print Bows

The Dollar Tree gift bag section has great quality bags sold at a major discount!  I check out the latest selection with every visit and I've found some really nice bows.  These new animal print bows are fabulous - great quality, shimmery, and large!

2. Magnetic Tins

How awesome are these tins?  Sold in the office supply aisle, they would work perfectly holding herbs on the outside OR INSIDE of a refrigerator.  These tins are sold at Bed Bath & Beyond for $3/each.  Don't believe me?  Check it out yourself here.

3.  Personal Fan

I love the idea of these fans for use during the hot summer months but also for use to set makeup during the application process or attached to a stroller to keep little ones cool!  I always check the electronic section for cool phone cases, accessories (selfie sticks, hello!), styluses and small electronics like the fan.  How perfect would a personal fan be at an amusement park or cookout?

Islanders, head over to your Dollar Tree in search of awesome goods for $1 or less!  You can't go wrong!

Purple and Gold Sweets Table

Months ago, I was hired to provide a simple sweets table design for a purple and gold bridal shower.

Thanks to Sheena, I had awesome frames.  I inherited those awesome frames from DatMyHoney's nursery.

I spray painted them gold and they were one of the unifying features on the sweets table!

DIY Febreeze!

I've shared my love of laundry detergent and how it makes my soul happy.  Remember the tutorial for carpet and mattress refresher (here)?  Just last week we talked about DIY wax melts (here).  Today, I'm sharing one of my favorite uses for a laundry aisle purchase!

Things I Love: Easy DIY "Wax" Melts

I don't know about you but, between Google and Pinterest, I just don't know who/what to trust as a viable source of information for application in my life.  I mean, I've learned that I'm one pretty photo away from believing toothpicks make for a durable and ideal flooring solution (joking... but you get what I mean).  Remember the Things I Love posts about makeup dupes and Easter?  Well, I'm back and sharing some information about a topic that applies to everyone.

Few things are as nice as the smell of a clean home.  What's your 'clean home' scent?  I wish I could walk in and it smelled like laundry. I actually thought I wanted the scent of Gain in my home everyday all day.  I bought the air fresheners and the warmers and the detergent and... Islanders, for some reason Gain-scented air fresheners make me nauseous.   Like, gag.  It's too much.

Then, I met Gain's scent Moonlight Breeze.  It is an awesome scent that isn't too floral-y or too fruity or too detergent-y.  It's great and I needed it in my home.  While I could've purchased some store-bought air fresheners, I wanted the exact scent I fell in love with so, I found a way to incorporate the original product into my home!

I purchased Gain Fireworks for my laundry and quickly realized that I loved how the house smelled whenever I had a load in the wash... uh, hello!  Did you catch that?  I had a load in the wash!  I mean, anything that motivates me to do laundry must be pretty amazing.  Can I get an amen?

Maybe it was my subconscious' ability to self-sabotage my every attempt to become a laundry lovin' diva OR maybe it was my inner frugalista's ability to hack expenses without compromising on quality BUT, whatever the case, I dumped some of that smell good in that wax burner and it was amazing!

Here's what you need:

- Decorative Wax Warmer (they're sold in the candle section of most stores with cords or votive candles required).
- Laundry Scent Boosting Beads (of your choice)
- Tablespoon for measuring

Here's what you do:

1.  Use table spoon to lace 1-3 scoops of the beads onto the warming plate of the warmer.  Be careful to place the beads as close to the center as possible.

2.  Turn on your warmer (or light your votive)

3.  Enjoy the yummy scent!

** remember to turn your warmer off or blow out candles when you are not home**

It doesn't take a lot and it has an amazing impact on the fresh scent in your home!  OMG! Be sure to let me know if you try the easiest DIY wax melts!
